Ekiti State Expands Power Infrastructure to Boost Electricity Supply
The Ekiti State Government has announced ongoing projects to strengthen electricity access by enhancing the national grid and expanding its Independent Power Project (IPP) to key public institutions.
Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, disclosed this during a stakeholders’ engagement in Ado-Ekiti. He stated the initiatives are part of federal and state interventions aimed at improving power reliability and supporting economic growth.
Key projects include the extension of a 33kV power line from Central Bank Junction in Ado-Ekiti to Iyin-Ekiti, and an 11kV line from the Government House area to the Ureje district. The latter will supply electricity from the state’s IPP to the Water Treatment Plant, Technical College, and Technology Incubation Centre.
Aluko explained that the state’s IPP, which currently provides about 2.6 megawatts at peak periods, is being expanded beyond its initial capacity. It now serves government offices, the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, and other key facilities due to growing demand.
These efforts align with Governor Biodun Oyebanji’s commitment to providing stable power to catalyze industrial development, job creation, and improved public services. The state is also implementing a “state grid” concept to complement the national network and ensure energy security.
Under a separate federal intervention, transformers have been distributed to several communities in Ado-Ekiti, including Uso-Agbaye, Ofin, and Olorunsogo.
Project Manager Nwovah Chicoba assured host communities of the government’s cooperation for timely project completion. Community leaders, including Chief Ajayi Ebenezer of Ugbaye and Chief Emmanuel Abiola of Uso, praised the initiatives as vital for socio-economic development.
The projects, approved by the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, are expected to significantly improve electricity supply to homes, businesses, and critical infrastructure across the state.
