Ekiti State to Install Three Agro-Meteorological Stations to Boost Livestock Production
Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, has approved the installation of three agro-meteorological stations across the state to enhance climate-smart livestock production and agricultural resilience.
The initiative is being executed under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), a nationwide program backed by the World Bank to improve livestock value chains and mitigate climate change risks.
According to the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Ebenezer Boluwade, the weather stations will be strategically positioned across the state’s major agro-ecological zones—Savannah, Derived Savannah, and Forest. The chosen locations include the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security Complex in Ado Ekiti, the State Agricultural Development Programme Complex in Ikole Ekiti, and the Faculty of Agriculture at Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology (BOUESTI) in Ikere Ekiti.
The stations are designed to capture and stream real-time meteorological data, including rainfall volume, ambient temperature, humidity levels, wind speed, and solar radiation.
Boluwade explained that the collected data will provide critical climate intelligence for livestock farmers, researchers, veterinary professionals, and policymakers. This information will support optimal pasture management, efficient water resource utilization, and proactive animal disease surveillance. Furthermore, the infrastructure is expected to strengthen Ekiti’s early warning systems against extreme weather events, shielding the agricultural sector from unexpected climate shocks and advancing food security.
