Enenche Opposes Calls to Remove Security Chiefs Over Persistent Insecurity
A former Coordinator of Defence Media Operations, Major General John Enenche (retd.), has stated that replacing Nigeria’s service chiefs will not provide a lasting solution to the country’s ongoing security challenges.
Enenche made the observations during an interview on Arise Television while responding to recent public demands for the resignation of top military leaders amid continued threats from terrorism, banditry, and violent crime.
The remarks follow a recent statement by the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Pastor Enoch Adeboye. Speaking at a workers’ meeting in May, Adeboye urged President Bola Tinubu to issue a 90-day ultimatum to the security chiefs to eliminate terrorists or resign, arguing that leadership must be held accountable for results.
However, Enenche countered that frequent changes in military leadership have historically proven ineffective against complex, deeply rooted security threats that have evolved over many years. He argued that replacing leadership every six months or year is not a viable strategy.
The retired general emphasized that addressing the crisis requires a long-term, coordinated approach rather than decisions driven by public pressure. He called on Nigerians to treat national security as a collective priority and support ongoing efforts to defeat criminal elements.
Enenche warned that without decisive and sustained action, the security crisis risks persisting across future administrations, stressing that the cycle must be stopped through national unity and strategic continuity.
