Enugu Assembly Asks Buhari To Investigate “Improper Role” Played By Military In Last Guber Election
President Muhammadu Buhari and the national assembly have been asked by the Enugu House of Assembly to investigate the “improper” roles played by the Nigerian military in the March 18 gubernatorial election in the state.
Chinedu Nwamba, the chairman, house committee on public accounts and anti-corruption, while moving a motion at plenary on Tuesday alleged that the soldiers deployed to the state for the election were involved in “the abduction of electoral officers, manipulation of results, and denying the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) agents access to collation centres across several local governments”.
Nwamba said the actions of the military personnel during the election led to the intimidation of voters and paved the way for massive rigging of the elections.
Following his submission, the house of assembly called on Buhari and the national assembly to save the nation’s democracy by ensuring that the “masterminds and culprits” are made to face justice.
“This honourable house urges the president and commander in chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, to cause an inquisition and investigate the roles and excesses of the military and security agencies in Enugu state during the March 18 elections to sanction anybody found wanting and to serve as a deterrent to others,” the house unanimously said.
“This honourable house urges the national assembly to confirm if it approved to deploy fully-armed military personnel on the March 18 governorship and the house of assembly elections in Enugu state.”
