Federal Government Renames Kaduna Petroleum Institute After Late General Shehu Yar’Adua

President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the recently completed Institute of Petroleum Studies in Kaduna to the General Shehu Musa Yar’Adua University of Geological Sciences and Engineering Technology.

The policy shift was made public on Friday, June 12, 2026, during the President’s annual Democracy Day national address. The administration framed the decision as a formal acknowledgment of the late military officer and politician’s historic role in establishing national partnerships and advancing the country’s early transitions toward democratic civilian rule.

In addition to the restructuring of the academic institution, the presidency announced that national honors have been approved for more than 30 prominent figures and soldier-democrats linked to the historic June 12 pro-democracy struggle. The list features multiple posthumous commendations, including recognitions for Dr. Arthur Nwankwo and Ben Charles-Obi.

State officials indicated that the full, comprehensive list of the decorated democracy heroes will be formally released by the federal government in the coming days.
