Fight Belongs at Wembley, Not Abroad – Former Champion Tells Joshua and Fury

Former WBA super-middleweight champion George Groves has urged organisers to stage the Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury heavyweight clash at Wembley Stadium, insisting the venue is the natural home for a fight of such magnitude.

Groves, who famously fought Carl Froch in a rematch at Wembley in 2014, said both British fighters would look back with pride if they chose the national stadium over an overseas location.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Groves expressed hope that the bout takes place on British soil so that local fight fans can easily attend and witness the two best heavyweights of their era compete. He described Wembley as the home of British boxing on a grand scale and the home of sport in Britain, adding that he would be disappointed if the fight went abroad.

He acknowledged, however, that both Joshua and Fury have already headlined at Wembley in world title fights, so returning there might not be high on their personal priorities. He noted that while boxing in Saudi Arabia, Las Vegas, New York, or Dublin has its appeal, the two Britons would eventually be happy they fought at Wembley.

Fury’s promoter, Frank Warren, has confirmed the fight is agreed and targeted for October, with Wembley currently the preferred venue. The bout will be streamed on Netflix and is subject to Joshua coming through his warm-up fight against Albania’s Kristian Prenga on July 25 in Riyadh. Fury may also take a tune-up bout beforehand.

Groves expressed confidence that the fight will eventually happen despite repeated delays, saying fans have waited long and will wait a little longer, adding that there is still excitement to see both boxers finally meet.
