Five Dead, 10 Rescued in Separate Kano Building Collapses
At least five people have died and 10 others were rescued following two separate building collapse incidents in the Kumbotso and Fagge Local Government Areas of Kano State.
The dual disasters occurred on Saturday afternoon at Gaida in Kumbotso and Kurna in Fagge, prompting emergency response calls to the Kano State Fire Service.
The first incident involved an unfinished structure measuring roughly 50 by 50 feet at Gaida, near Salbas Filling Station, which collapsed while six construction workers were on site. Responders retrieved two workers alive—identified as 17-year-old Muhammad Hassan and 19-year-old Khalid Abubakar—while four others, aged between 18 and 30, were recovered unconscious and later confirmed dead at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.
Minutes later, a second collapse was reported at the Khadija Idris Bala Islamiyya school in the Kurna area of Fagge. Firefighters rescued eight students alive, aged between 12 and 15, while a ninth student, 14-year-old Khadija Muhammad, was pulled from the rubble unconscious and subsequently pronounced dead.
Authorities have opened investigations to determine the underlying causes of both failures. In response to the incidents, state fire officials urged property developers and construction site managers to adhere strictly to building codes and safety guidelines, particularly during heavy rainfall periods.
