Yahaya Bello Vows to “Deal With” Political Rivals Misusing Election Campaigns
Former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has issued a stern warning to political opponents in the Kogi Central senatorial district, promising to “deal with” individuals who defame his character during upcoming political campaigns.
Speaking at a public gathering in Abuja, the former governor stated that he would not tolerate malicious attacks under the guise of electioneering activities leading up to the 2027 general elections. He urged residents to move away from old political styles and support the current state and federal administrations.
“You cannot tell me that as a result of a campaign, that it is a political season, you use your mouth to malign me,” Bello warned. “I will deal with you. I will come against you.”
The remarks come amid an enduring political rivalry between Bello’s political camp and the incumbent Senator representing Kogi Central, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan. The two factions have consistently traded public accusations, with Akpoti-Uduaghan raising concerns over governance, accountability, and the intimidation of her supporters, while Bello has accused the lawmaker of inciting regional political tensions.
Bello’s public warning coincides with his ongoing legal battles with federal anti-graft authorities. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is currently prosecuting the former governor before a Federal High Court on charges involving an alleged ₦110.4 billion fraud and money laundering scheme. Bello has maintained a plea of not guilty, asserting that the financial crime allegations against him are entirely politically motivated.
