France Condemns Burkina Faso’s Severing of Diplomatic Ties, Warns of Reciprocal Action
The French government has formally condemned Burkina Faso’s decision to unilaterally sever diplomatic relations, characterizing the move as a “hostile and baseless” action that signals a “worrying drift” in the conduct of the West African nation’s military leadership.
In an official statement, the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs expressed deep regret regarding the breakdown in relations. While the French government criticized the ruling authorities in Ouagadougou, it emphasized that it remains committed to the Burkinabè people and noted the long-standing historical connections between the two nations.
French officials confirmed they are currently evaluating “necessary reciprocal measures” in response to the development. Additionally, the government has issued a security advisory for French nationals currently in Burkina Faso, urging them to exercise heightened vigilance as tensions between the two countries reach a new peak.
This diplomatic collapse follows years of strained relations between Paris and the military-led government, which took power in 2022. The Burkinabè authorities have increasingly accused France of maintaining “neo-colonial” interests and failing to adequately support the country’s efforts to combat regional insurgencies a sentiment that has led to the progressive expulsion of French troops and diplomatic personnel.
The current escalation reflects a broader trend of shifting geopolitical alliances in the region, as Burkina Faso continues to distance itself from its former colonial partner in favor of new international affiliations.
