Ghana’s Tallest Man, Sulemana ‘Awuche’ Abdul Samed, Passes Away at 33

Sulemana Abdul Samed, popularly known as “Awuche,” Ghana’s tallest man, has passed away at the age of 33 following a prolonged battle with health complications related to gigantism and Marfan syndrome.

Awuche died on Monday at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where he was receiving treatment for severe leg infections. News of his passing has sparked widespread grief, particularly across northern Ghana, where his towering presence and generous personality made him a iconic local figure.

Diagnosed in his early 20s with acromegaly and gigantism conditions triggered by an overproduction of growth hormone Awuche’s life changed dramatically during his years working in Accra. Rapid physical growth altered his mobility, forced him to leave his goal of becoming a driver, and prompted his return to his hometown of Gambaga nearly a decade ago.

Standing at 7 feet 4 inches (223 cm), Awuche faced distinct daily challenges. Standard clothing, footwear, and furniture were unsuited to his height, requiring custom-made outfits, footwear fashioned from car tires, and modified mattresses. His unique stature earned him national attention, temporarily putting his small village on the map.

In recent weeks, high-profile efforts were made to assist with his medical expenses, including support for specialized treatment for chronic leg ulcers and spinal issues. Despite medical intervention in Tamale, his condition deteriorated rapidly due to severe infection.

Family members confirmed that Awuche will be buried in Tamale under Islamic traditions, opting against a funeral in Gambaga to prevent the small village from being overwhelmed by the large influx of expected mourners. He is remembered by relatives and locals alike as a kind, gentle, and resilient figure who maintained a positive spirit despite intense physical hardship.
