Ghana’s Thomas Partey Denied Canada Entry Ahead of World Cup Opener

Ghana national team midfielder Thomas Partey has been ruled out of his country’s opening match of the FIFA World Cup against Panama after Canadian immigration authorities denied his entry visa application.

The 32-year-old Villarreal midfielder was scheduled to travel to Toronto alongside the rest of the Ghanaian squad from their pre-tournament training camp in Boston, Massachusetts. However, the unexpected visa refusal blocked him from joining the team across the border.

FIFA addressed the situation in an official statement, clarifying that the governing body maintains a strict policy of non-intervention regarding the domestic border controls of tournament co-hosts.

“FIFA is not involved in the immigration processes of host countries, including the adjudication of visas,” the statement read. “The host government ultimately determines who receives a visa and is admitted into the country.”

While Canadian officials have not publicly detailed the specific grounds for the visa denial, Partey is currently facing significant legal proceedings in the United Kingdom. The player has pleaded not guilty to seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving four women, with the allegations dating between 2020 and 2022. His criminal trial is currently scheduled to commence next year.

The loss of the experienced central midfielder forces Ghana’s technical staff into an immediate tactical realignment as they finalize their lineup for the crucial Group stage fixture against Panama.
