Guinea Junta Chief to Be Sworn In as President

Guinea coup leader elected president, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya

Guinea’s junta leader, Mamady Doumbouya, will be sworn in as president on January 17, the presidency announced Tuesday. The inauguration follows an election last month in which all main opposition leaders were barred from running.

Doumbouya, who seized power in a 2021 coup, was credited with 86.7% of the vote, a result validated by the Supreme Court. His candidacy was made possible by a new constitution, approved in a September referendum, which also extended presidential terms to seven years.

Since the coup, Doumbouya’s rule has been marked by a crackdown on dissent, including banned protests, arrests of opponents, and suspended media outlets. He has rarely been seen in public in recent weeks.
