Gwagwalada Flood Sweeps Away 13-Year-Old Pupil, Corpse Yet to Be Recovered
A 13-year-old Junior Secondary School student of Ihyau El-Burhan Academy, Phase 3, Gwagwalada Area Council, Alhassan Jamil, has died after he was swept away by flood on Wednesday, September 9.
The boy’s father, Jamil Maikasuwa, who is Special Assistant to the Chairman of Gwagwalada Council on Domestic Affairs, told DailyTrust that he was taking his son to school on a motorcycle when the incident occurred.
According to him, while crossing a double-cell culvert, he noticed flood water moving at high speed and applied the brakes.
“Out of fear, my son jumped from the bike and suddenly fell into the flood water. I quickly pushed the bike aside and tried to grab his hand but unfortunately, the flood water swept him away,” he said.
Maikasuwa said the corpse is yet to be recovered. He disclosed that fishermen and divers have been mobilized to search for the body.
“Some residents whose houses are close to the river bank said they discovered the corpse with his school bag strapped to his back floating. We hope that the corpse will be recovered so we can give him a befitting burial,” he added.
