,ICPC Grants El-Rufai Temporary Release to Attend Mother’s Burial
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission has granted temporary bail to former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai after weeks in detention, allowing him to attend his mother’s funeral.
The former governor was released on compassionate grounds following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who reportedly passed away in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday.
An aide to El-Rufai confirmed that the anti-corruption agency approved the temporary release due to the family’s bereavement, though details of the conditions attached were not disclosed. The ICPC had not issued an official statement on the matter as of the time of filing this report.
El-Rufai’s son, Bashir El-Rufai, announced his father’s release on social media, criticizing the commission in his remarks. He described the detention as unlawful and accused the agency of corruption, adding that the family would not forget the experience.
El-Rufai, who governed Kaduna State from 2015 to 2023, remains a prominent political figure in Nigeria. It remains unclear whether the temporary release will lead to full bail or if he is expected to return to ICPC custody following the bur,ial rites.
