ICPC Partners with Borno Banks to Strengthen Anti-Money Laundering Efforts
The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has launched a strategic partnership with financial institutions in Borno State to bolster efforts against money laundering and illicit financial transactions.
During a sensitization session held in Maiduguri on Tuesday, the commission emphasized the role of the banking sector as a primary “gatekeeper” of financial integrity. Linus Gubbi, the ICPC’s Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Borno and Yobe states, noted that robust internal banking controls are essential to disrupting corrupt activities, such as the diversion of public funds, procurement fraud, and the use of shell companies to launder proceeds of crime.
Gubbi highlighted that the unique landscape of Borno State which involves large-scale reconstruction projects, humanitarian aid, and security-related logistics creates high-volume financial activity that is particularly vulnerable to exploitation. “When controls are strong, corruption becomes harder to execute and easier to detect,” he remarked.
The commission urged banking professionals to remain vigilant and ensure the timely reporting of suspicious transactions to relevant authorities. The initiative is aimed at fostering a more collaborative relationship between law enforcement and the financial sector, ensuring that banks are equipped to identify and mitigate risks associated with bribery, gratification, and the illicit movement of funds.
Representatives from the banking community welcomed the initiative. Babagana Kyari, Northeast Regional Manager for Eco Bank, described the session as a necessary reminder of the financial sector’s responsibility in maintaining societal integrity. He noted that the training provided a clearer understanding of the protocols required to combat corruption effectively.
The ICPC reaffirmed its commitment to continuing such engagements, asserting that a collaborative approach between regulators and financial institutions is vital to safeguarding public resources and promoting fiscal transparency in the region.
