ICPC Recovers N5.8bn in Proceeds of Crime During First Half of 2026

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has announced the recovery of approximately N5.79 billion in illicit funds between January and June 2026. This action is part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to enhance national accountability and mitigate the impact of corruption on Nigeria’s security and public infrastructure.

In its mid-year performance report, the commission emphasized that corruption remains a primary driver of instability, frequently siphoning resources away from essential security and public services. By safeguarding public funds and enforcing institutional integrity, the agency aims to foster a more secure environment for the populace.

Beyond financial recoveries, the commission’s report detailed significant operational activities during the six-month period. The agency received 271 formal petitions, leading to 234 cases being assigned for investigation. Of these, 25 cases were filed in court, resulting in 20 successful convictions.

The commission also focused on preventive measures and public engagement to curb corrupt practices. These initiatives included:

Institutional Audits: Conducted 33 systems studies and corruption risk assessments, alongside 42 monitoring exercises across various government sectors.

Administrative Oversight: Inaugurated 58 Anti-Corruption and Transparency Units within various ministries, departments, and agencies.

Public Awareness: Hosted 291 sensitization sessions and conferences, engaging nearly 200,000 participants nationwide.

Youth Engagement: Established 68 anti-corruption clubs to promote ethical values among young people.

The commission described these results as a significant advancement in the fight against impunity and a tangible step toward ensuring that public resources are utilized for their intended purposes. While acknowledging that the challenge of corruption remains persistent, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to building a system where integrity is a core component of national security.
