INEC Identifies 385 Security Flashpoints and 200 Difficult Terrains Ahead of Osun Governorship Poll

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has raised concerns regarding potential logistical and security challenges ahead of the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August 15, 2026. During a security meeting in Osogbo, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Osun, Oluwatoyin Babalola, announced that the commission has mapped out 385 security flashpoints and 200 locations characterized as “difficult terrain” across the state’s 30 local government areas.

Babalola explained that the risk assessment data has been shared with security agencies to facilitate strategic deployment and ensure the safety of electoral staff and voters. She noted that many of the identified areas are physically inaccessible by road, posing a significant hurdle for the delivery of electoral materials and personnel. The commission is currently conducting specialized training for its field officers to navigate these challenges and manage potential security threats effectively.

Addressing the readiness for the upcoming election, the REC confirmed that INEC has already taken delivery of approximately 75 per cent of the necessary materials, with non-statutory items already deployed to designated locations. She emphasized that while the commission is committed to conducting a transparent and inclusive election, the success of the exercise relies heavily on a peaceful atmosphere.

The meeting, which included the Deputy Inspector General of Police for the South West, Adegoke Fayoade, and other security heads, focused on harmonizing strategies to prevent disruptions. Security officials provided assurances that they are working to secure the state, particularly in areas identified as prone to violence, such as Ila and Ifedayo local government areas, which have recently faced security issues.

The August 15 election will feature incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party seeking re-election, as he faces stiff competition from Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress and Dr. Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress. INEC continues to appeal for cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process remains peaceful and credible.
