Jonathan Bids Farewell As Sierra Leone Ex-President Koroma Returns Home After 2-Yrs in Nigeria

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has seen off former Sierra Leone President Ernest Bai Koroma as he returns to Freetown after spending more than two years in Nigeria.

Koroma left Sierra Leone for Nigeria in January 2024 after facing treason and other charges linked to the November 2023 failed coup attempt. He had initially travelled to Nigeria for medical treatment after receiving permission from Sierra Leonean authorities.

Sierra Leone discontinued the criminal proceedings against Koroma in July 2026, clearing the way for his return home. Authorities subsequently said he was free to return to the country.

Jonathan described Koroma as his “dear friend and brother” and said Nigeria had become his “home away from home” during his stay. He expressed gratitude that Nigeria was able to provide friendship, support and solidarity to the former Sierra Leonean leader.

Jonathan also said he and others had quietly encouraged dialogue and engagement with Sierra Leonean authorities to help create conditions for Koroma’s safe and dignified return.

He welcomed Koroma’s return to Freetown and wished him peace of mind and success in the next chapter of his life, describing the homecoming as an opportunity for renewed hope and reconciliation for Koroma, his family and the people of Sierra Leone.
