Kano Deputy Governor Resigns Amid Tensions With Assembly

The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has resigned from his position.
His spokesperson confirmed the development on Friday, stating that the resignation had been formally communicated. However, no further details were provided regarding the circumstances surrounding the decision.
The resignation comes amid recent tensions between the deputy governor and the Kano State House of Assembly. In recent days, lawmakers had levelled a series of allegations against Gwarzo, including claims of misconduct related to the discharge of his official responsibilities. The Assembly had also initiated moves described by observers as a prelude to possible disciplinary action.
The development also follows political realignments in Kano after Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection to the All Progressives Congress. Since the defection, the governor has embarked on a series of changes within the government, including the removal of the Head of Service and the Commissioner for Investment, Commerce and Industry, as part of efforts to restructure government operations.
While the specifics of the allegations against Gwarzo have not been fully clarified, sources within the Assembly indicated that the matter was under legislative scrutiny before his resignation.
Gwarzo’s resignation is expected to trigger constitutional processes regarding the appointment of a new deputy governor, subject to the approval of the state House of Assembly. Analysts say the development may further reshape the political landscape in Kano as the state navigates ongoing alignments ahead of future electoral contests.
