Kano Police Quiz ADC Assembly Candidate Warkal Over Firearm Display at Rally
The Kano State Police Command has warned politicians and their supporters against displaying weapons during political activities, saying such conduct could threaten public peace and security.
The Command has also invited Aminu Warkal, candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the state house of assembly for questioning over video circulating on social media in which he was allegedly seen displaying firearm suspected to be pump-action rifle.
Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, disclosed this in statement issued on Monday.
Kiyawa said the video was discovered during command’s routine cyber patrol and appeared to have been recorded at political gathering.
Following development, Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, directed Warkal to report to command headquarters in Bompai, Kano.
Police spokesman said Warkal was currently at State Intelligence Department, where investigation into matter was ongoing.
Kiyawa said alleged unlawful display of firearm, if established, could constitute violation of provisions of Firearms Act.
He added that such conduct could create fear among residents, intimidate members of public and threaten public peace.
Command warned that it would not tolerate lawlessness, thuggery or display of weapons capable of causing insecurity, regardless of status of those involved.
“The Command will not tolerate any act of lawlessness, thuggery, or display of weapons capable of threatening public peace, irrespective of status of person involved,” statement said.
Police urged politicians, their supporters and other stakeholders to conduct their activities peacefully and comply with relevant laws.
Command specifically advised political actors to abide by Electoral Act, Firearms Act and other laws regulating public conduct.
It said all political activities should be conducted in manner that promotes peace, tolerance and respect for rule of law.
Command reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace in Kano State before, during and after political season.
