Kwankwasiyya Movement Denies Reports of Kwankwaso’s Planned Defection to APC
The Kwankwasiyya political movement has firmly dismissed widespread media reports suggesting its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, is negotiating a defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress.
In a statement released on Tuesday by its spokesperson, Dr. Habibu Mohammed, the group described the reports as “entirely false, baseless, and deliberately misleading.”
The denial comes amid a period of political realignment in Kano State, following the recent defection of Governor Abba Yusuf and numerous state lawmakers from the New Nigeria Peoples Party to the APC.
According to the statement, Kwankwaso has not engaged in any discussions or negotiations with the APC, President Bola Tinubu, or any representatives regarding a possible defection.
“We state clearly, categorically, and without any ambiguity that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has never at any time entered into negotiations, discussions, or meetings with the APC for the purpose of defection,” Mohammed said.
The movement clarified that the last formal meeting between Kwankwaso and President Tinubu took place in January 2024, and no talks about defection or political bargaining occurred.
It criticized sections of the media for spreading unverified claims, urging journalists to uphold professional standards of accuracy and verification, especially on sensitive political matters.
The statement suggested that the reports are part of a coordinated effort to damage Kwankwaso’s reputation and political standing ahead of future realignments.
“It has become increasingly clear that these reports form part of a broader, coordinated attempt by sections of the political elite to discredit Senator Kwankwaso,” Mohammed added.
The Kwankwasiyya movement affirmed that Kwankwaso remains a politician of principle whose support is rooted in the people, not in elite negotiations. It called on the public to disregard the speculation and reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to its political path.
