Kwara: Ministry of Environment seals cold room for selling rotten fish

The Kwara State Ministry of Environment on Saturday intercepted and sealed a cold room in Ilorin, the state capital, for selling spoilt fish to members of the public.

The Kwara State Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, who confirmed the action, declared that “Our officers have done the needful, by halting further sale, confiscating the items and sealing the premises.”

Buge warned business owners to desist from trading in unhealthy items, describing such conduct as inhuman, ungodly, and against the law.

The commissioner, however, commended residents of the state for participating actively in the monthly clean-up and bush clearing exercise around their homes during Saturday’s environmental sanitation.

She urged residents to continue to prioritise their health by participating regularly in sanitation exercises, keeping their surroundings clean, and reporting any suspicious activity that could endanger public health to the ministry or the nearest law enforcement agency.

Saturday’s sanitation exercise was monitored by the Chairman, Kwara State House Committee on Environment, Omotosho AbdulRazaq, and the General Manager, Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, Honourable Jide Aina.

They also interacted with community groups and associations to encourage public participation in the exercise.

In a statement on Saturday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmed Rufa’i, said the incident occurred on October 4, 2025, in Gidan Kacha, Gada Local Government Area of Sokoto State.

According to the police, the victim, identified as Ali Salisu from Darnawa village, had travelled to Gidan Kacha to visit his girlfriend, Rukayya Amadu. Unknown to him, Rukayya had allegedly conspired with another boyfriend, Hamisu Ibrahim, to lure him into a deadly trap.

“All four suspects have been arrested and are in custody. They will face charges of criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, armed robbery, and receiving stolen property,” DSP Rufa’i said.
