Low Wages: Aviation Workers Suspend Strike

Aviation workers under the aegis of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) and Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), have suspended a strike action embarked upon over poor wages.

Workers at the National Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO) on Monday morning downed tools at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, disrupting international flights and other activities, leaving hundreds of air passengers stranded

Deputy General Secretary of ATSSSAN, Frances Akinjole, however confirmed on Monday evening that the industrial action had been suspended.

Meanwhile, the management of NAHCO has withdrawn a lawsuit it earlier filed against the striking staff.

At a meeting on Monday afternoon, resolutions were jointly signed by three major parties involved in the crisis.

The resolutions which were were signed by representatives of the Air Transport Services Association of Nigeria, Comrade Frances Akinjole, National Union of Air Transport Association (NUATE), Comrade Ocheme Aba and Sola Obabori on behalf of NAHCO, in the presence of some observers, stated that the management of NAHCO withdrew the suit immediately to give room for negotiations.

The resolutions stated that the ground handling company’s management had decided to withdraw the suit and vacate the earlier obtained court order of last Friday.
