Mangal Foundation’s Free Eye Care Initiative Reaches 18,000 Patients

A philanthropic initiative has provided free eye treatments and surgeries to no fewer than 18,000 vulnerable patients in Katsina State and beyond since 2016, organizers announced.
The Mangal Foundation reported that approximately 7,000 individuals benefited in 2025 alone, with services extending to neighboring states and parts of the Niger Republic.
The update was delivered on Friday by Mr. Hussaini Kabir, a member of the foundation’s Board of Trustees, during the launch of the final quarterly eye surgery campaign for 2025 at the Katsina Eye Centre.
Kabir explained that screening for the latest round began two weeks prior, with many patients already receiving free medication and corrective glasses. Approximately 2,000 people were screened in this phase, and those requiring surgery are having all associated costs, including their hospital stay, fully covered.
“Our aim is to complement government efforts and ease the healthcare cost burden on the most vulnerable, especially those struggling to meet basic needs,” Kabir stated, reaffirming the foundation’s commitment to healthcare access as a core part of its social responsibility.
Medical personnel at the centre highlighted the critical need for such interventions. Ophthalmologist Ahmad Hamza noted that many patients present with cataracts and glaucoma, conditions often requiring surgery.
He urged the public to prioritize regular eye check-ups, emphasizing that early detection of silent diseases like glaucoma, cataracts, and macular degeneration is key to preventing permanent vision loss.
The human impact of the initiative was echoed by beneficiaries. Malam Yusufa Usman, who suffered from vision impairment for over two years, underwent surgery he could not previously afford.
“For the past two years, I could not see clearly… I am hopeful my sight will be restored. I pray that Almighty Allah rewards the Mangal Foundation,” he said.
Another patient, Aisha Muntari from Bakura village, shared her relief after almost losing hope following a year of eye problems. Awaiting her turn in the theatre, she expressed confidence that the procedure would restore her sight.
The foundation continues its efforts to address vision care accessibility, targeting those most in need across the region.
