Mitigate Impact of Fuel Subsidy Removal on Citizens, LIFES Urges Nigerian Government
Local Initiative for Environmental Sustainability (LIFES), a leading non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting environmental conservation and sustainable development, strongly advocates for the Nigerian government to implement comprehensive policies that will mitigate economic, social and environmental impacts of fuel subsidy removal on its citizens.
A statement signed by the President and Chief Executive Officer of the organisation, Sylvester Tunde Atere, says “LIFES recognizes the potential benefits of fuel subsidy removal, such as reduced fossil fuel consumption and the transition towards renewable energy. However, the organization expresses deep concern about the adverse effects this move may have on all aspects of Nigerians’ lives, especially in light of the recent World Bank Nigeria Development Update report which projects that an additional 7.1 million Nigerians could be pushed into poverty without appropriate compensatory measures.”
While LIFES supports the government’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions, the organization emphasizes the importance of considering potential short-term inflationary pressures and the implications for the socio-economic well-being of the population. As advocates for environmental sustainability, LIFES recognizes the urgency of addressing climate change and the necessity of transitioning away from fossil fuels. Nonetheless, the organization firmly believes that these efforts should not come at the expense of vulnerable segments of the population.
LIFES calls on the government to take the following measures to alleviate the impact of fuel subsidy removal on the populace:
Social Safety Nets: The government should prioritize establishing and expanding robust social safety net programmes that offer targeted support to vulnerable groups, ensuring access to essential services, healthcare, and education.
Subsidized Public Transportation: Investments in public transportation infrastructure and services will help alleviate the burden of transportation expenses on citizens, particularly low-income individuals who heavily rely on affordable transportation options.
Renewable Energy Incentives: The government should introduce financial incentives and subsidies to encourage the adoption of renewable energy technologies by households and businesses. This approach will not only reduce dependency on fossil fuels but also stimulate green job creation and economic growth.
Support for Green Entrepreneurship: Promote green entrepreneurship by providing financial support, training, and access to markets for businesses and start-ups focused on eco-friendly solutions and renewable energy projects.
Transparent Monitoring and Reporting: Ensure transparency and accountability in the implementation of policies related to subsidy removal and its impact on citizens. Regular monitoring and reporting will help identify any unforeseen challenges and allow for timely adjustments.
Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with civil society organizations, community leaders, and representatives of marginalized groups to seek their input and involve them in decision-making processes related to policies affecting their lives.
LIFES acknowledges that the short-term inflationary effects of subsidy removal may only be temporary. However, the organization emphasizes that the negative impact on millions of Nigerians could have long-lasting repercussions on their socio-economic well-being and hinder efforts towards achieving sustainable development.
As an organization dedicated to environmental sustainability, LIFES emphasizes the importance of comprehensive and holistic policies that balance the urgency of climate action with the protection of the most vulnerable in society. LIFES firmly believes that a sustainable future can be achieved through inclusive and people-centric approaches.
LIFES calls upon the government to prioritize the well-being of its citizens in all policy decisions, including those related to energy and environmental sustainability. By working together, we can build a resilient and prosperous Nigeria that prioritizes both environmental protection and social equity.
