NANS condemns LAUTECH over student suspensions, schedules Monday protest
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone D, has criticised the management of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, Oyo State, for suspending several students over their involvement in a peaceful protest.
The protest was against the relocation of the Anatomy and Physiology Departments from the College of Health Sciences to the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences.
In a statement on Sunday, NANS officials described the suspensions as unfair, noting that the students had raised legitimate concerns about a policy affecting their academic welfare, transportation, finances, and overall well-being. The association said it does not encourage disorder but expressed disappointment that the university chose punitive measures over constructive dialogue.
NANS further noted that the Students’ Union Government at LAUTECH has been suspended for a prolonged period, leaving students without a formal channel to voice grievances. The absence of a union, it argued, has widened the communication gap between management and students.
Describing the four-semester suspension of the affected students as excessive and disproportionate, NANS demanded an immediate review and reversal of the punishment, open dialogue with management, a clear timeline for restoring the Students’ Union Government, and an end to all forms of victimisation.
The association vowed to lead a peaceful protest on the university campus on Monday, June 8, 2026, to press its demands. It expressed hope that LAUTECH management would choose dialogue over sanctions in the interest of academic excellence and justice.
