NDDC Donates Relief Materials to Correctional Centres in Rivers State

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has donated a consignment of relief materials to the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Rivers State Command, as part of a humanitarian effort to mitigate the impact of current economic challenges on inmates.

The items were presented on behalf of the NDDC Managing Director, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, by the Director of Social Services, Jeremiah Oritsejolone. Speaking during the handover, Oritsejolone stated that the initiative aligns with the “Renewed Hope Agenda” of the federal government and reflects the commission’s commitment to supporting vulnerable populations and institutions within the Niger Delta region.

“The NDDC recognizes the current global economic hardship, which has also affected Nigeria,” Oritsejolone said. “While we cannot reach every community at the same time, we identify the most vulnerable groups for intervention. Inmates are members of our society, and as many will eventually reintegrate into their communities, it is essential that we contribute to their welfare during their time in custody.”

Engr. Okezie Ule, Director of the NDDC’s Rivers State office, noted that the donation was intended to support the NCoS in its critical role of maintaining law and order.

In his response, the Controller of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Rivers State Command, Richard Moses Williams, expressed gratitude for the gesture, describing it as a significant act of compassion. He assured the commission that the relief materials would be distributed equitably across all custodial centres in the state to ensure that every inmate benefits.

The initiative also received commendation from the Rivers State Coordinator of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Ambassador Ipalibo Madodoye, who highlighted the alignment of the donation with goals related to peace, justice, and social inclusion. The SDG office indicated plans to continue partnering with the NDDC on future projects aimed at supporting vulnerable groups across the region.
