NDLEA Warns Youths Against Rising Drug Abuse, Links It to Crime
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has raised an alarm over the increasing rate of drug abuse among Nigerian youths, stating it has no benefits and often leads to crime.
The warning was given by Mrs. Oluwatoyin Adegoke, Deputy Commander of the NDLEA in Osun State, during a two-day orientation program for new students at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila-Orangun, on Tuesday.
Adegoke explained that many youths involved in drug abuse end up bringing sorrow to their families and society, noting that drug abuse is a root cause of various criminal activities in the country.
She identified peer pressure, ignorance, drug availability, and family background as key factors driving substance abuse and warned that it can cause severe physical, psychological, and social harm.
“Drug abuse has no benefits. Stay away from it. Do not associate with those who engage in drug abuse; instead, focus on your studies and strive for excellence,” she urged the students.
In his address, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Akeem Lasisi, represented by his deputy, Prof. Monsuru Adegoke, also cautioned the 1,200 newly admitted students against cybercrime, indecent dressing, cultism, and other vices, noting that violators of university rules would face sanctions.
