NELFUND Disburses Over N1.3 Billion for UNILAG Student Tuition

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed N1.33 billion to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to cover tuition and fees for the 2025/2026 academic session.

The funds, transferred on January 19, 2026, are designated for 6,308 verified students at the university who qualified under the federal government’s student loan program. According to a statement from NELFUND, the disbursement is part of its scheduled payments for the academic year and follows a validation process using institutional data.

NELFUND’s Managing Director, Akintunde Sawyerr, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to transparency and timely disbursement. “We are working closely with all partner institutions to resolve any administrative gaps and to ensure that no eligible student is disadvantaged,” Sawyerr stated. The Fund also noted it is engaging with UNILAG to finalize the reconciliation process and has advised students to seek clarification directly from their university’s bursary or student affairs office.

This disbursement is part of the broader Nigeria Student Loan Scheme signed into law by President Bola Tinubu in April 2024.

The interest-free loan initiative aims to remove financial barriers to higher education. Nationwide, the total amount disbursed under the scheme stood at N174.56 billion as of January 23, 2026. Recipients are required to repay the loans after completing their studies and securing employment.
