Nigeria, US Forces Eliminate Senior ISIS Leader in Lake Chad Operation – What You Need to Know

In a joint military operation in the Lake Chad Basin, Nigerian and United States forces killed a high-ranking Islamic State commander identified as Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok. The raid has been hailed by both President Bola Tinubu and US President Donald Trump as a major blow to global terrorist networks.

Al-Manuki, a Nigerian national from Mainok town in Borno State, was born in 1982. He began his militant career as a commander in Boko Haram before pledging allegiance to ISIS in 2015, transitioning into the global jihadist fold. Over the years, he rose to become a senior figure within ISIS’s Sahel operations, specifically in the Lake Chad division of the group’s General Directorate of Provinces.

Intelligence sources describe him as a key coordinator within the al-Furqan office network, which directs operational strategies across Nigeria, the Sahel, and the wider West African region. He gained prominence after the 2018 killing of ISWAP leader Mamman Nur, eventually becoming a central node in the group’s command structure. He was also involved in internal factional disputes, including strained relations with Boko Haram’s then-leader Abubakar Shekau.

Beyond command duties, Al-Manuki oversaw weapons manufacturing, explosives development, drone operations, and global media production for ISIS. He provided strategic guidance to affiliates outside Nigeria, particularly on economic warfare tactics. As recently as February 2026, military assessments suggested he may have been elevated to head the ISIS General Directorate of States, placing him among the very top echelons of the global network.

He was linked to several high-profile atrocities, including the 2018 kidnapping of the Dapchi schoolgirls an abduction that drew worldwide condemnation. Between 2015 and 2016, he also allegedly facilitated the movement of fighters to Libya to support ISIS operations in North Africa, extending his reach far beyond the Lake Chad region.

The United States had designated him a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in June 2023. His killing marks a significant counterterrorism success in a region where ISIS-linked groups have remained resilient despite sustained military pressure.

The joint operation underscores deepening security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States aimed at dismantling extremist leadership networks across West Africa.
