Troops of the 12 Brigade, 2 Division of the Nigerian Army have successfully foiled a kidnapping attempt and neutralised one terrorist during an ambush operation in Lokoja Local Government Area of Kogi State.

According to a statement released early Sunday by Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, the operation took place on May 30, 2026, following credible intelligence that terrorists were planning to carry out kidnapping activities in the Jakura II community.

Acting on the information, soldiers swiftly deployed and positioned themselves at a suspected crossing point used by the criminals along the Old Obajana–Tajimi Road, where they laid an ambush to prevent the attackers from carrying out their plan.

During the operation, troops engaged the terrorists with heavy fire. One terrorist was killed on the spot, while others managed to escape with what are believed to be gunshot wounds.

A search of the scene led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, five magazines, 70 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, one bandolier, and several mobile phones. Military authorities stated that the recovered items confirmed the involvement of the criminal group in kidnapping activities within the area.

Lieutenant Abdullahi noted that the operation demonstrated the commitment of the 12 Brigade to sustaining offensive actions against terrorists and other criminals threatening the safety of citizens. He added that efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.

The Commander of the 12 Brigade, Brigadier General Kasim Umar Sidi, praised the troops for their vigilance and professionalism.
