Nigerian National Grid Begins Recovery After Widespread Collapse

Power restoration is underway across Nigeria following a major collapse of the national electricity grid on Friday, which caused a nationwide blackout.

The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (Eko DisCo) confirmed the recovery process, announcing it had started to progressively restore supply to its network. “We are pleased to inform you that power restoration from the grid has resumed,” the company stated in a social media update.

The collapse had drastically cut power generation to as low as 20 megawatts, leaving most of the country without electricity. Data released during the incident showed that, for a period, only one of Nigeria’s eleven distribution companies, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company, received any allocation from the grid.

This marks the latest in a series of systemic failures. Just three weeks prior, on December 29, 2025, the grid also failed, causing generation to plummet from over 2,000 megawatts to under 140 megawatts in one hour. A similar collapse was recorded in September 2025, and another major incident occurred in March 2025, which followed shortly after government announcements of a rise in power generation.

The repeated failures underscore ongoing instability within the country’s national power infrastructure, leading to frequent and widespread disruptions for citizens and businesses.
