Nigerian Navy ends 70th anniversary with dinner and awards night

The Nigerian Navy has rounded off its week-long 70th anniversary celebrations with a ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night held on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, at the Naval Dockyard Limited, Victoria Island, Lagos.
The event served as the grand finale of activities marking seven decades of naval service, bringing together top government officials, senior military officers, veterans, and other maritime sector stakeholders.
The evening featured naval drills and manoeuvres performed by personnel, showcasing the discipline and operational readiness of the Navy. The celebration later continued at Eko Hotel and Suites, where guests were treated to cultural performances, orchestral renditions, and live band entertainment.
Officers, ratings, and veterans were honoured during the ceremony for their professionalism, dedication, and long years of service to the nation’s maritime defence.
Speaking at the event, the Chief of Naval Staff, Idi Abass, expressed appreciation to the Federal Government for its continued support, particularly in terms of funding and fleet expansion.
“Our notable achievement and future aspirations are undeniably rooted in the unwavering support of the Federal Government, for which we are profoundly grateful. The continued commitment of the President and the Commander-in-Chief through consistent funding and the acquisition of capital platforms has rejuvenated our fleet and empowered the Nigerian Navy,” he said.
Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, commended the Navy’s contribution to maritime security and national development while calling for increased investment in technology and innovation. He noted that future naval operations would depend heavily on advanced technologies, including surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned systems, and cyber operations, as well as stronger international partnerships.
One of the major highlights of the evening was the presentation of awards to outstanding personnel in recognition of their service.
Other anniversary activities included the commissioning of three new naval ships, a fleet pass at the Eko Atlantic City waterfront, and the “Sail With The Nigerian Navy” initiative, which took over 2,200 civilians to sea.
Dignitaries present included the Lagos State Governor, senior naval officers, and other top government officials.
