Nigerian Students Secure Top Awards at Global Huawei ICT Finals in China
Nigerian students achieved record-breaking success at the 10th Huawei Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Competition Global Finals held in Shenzhen, China, securing multiple top honors at the international tech event.
According to an official statement, the global contest took place from June 2 to 5, attracting over 201,000 student participants from more than 100 countries and regions. Out of over 6,000 initial entrants from Nigeria, 15 students advanced to represent the country in the global finals.
The Nigerian continent comprised five distinct teams drawn from several institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University, University of Port Harcourt, University of Lagos, Federal University of Technology Minna, Igbinedion University, and Nasarawa State University.
The final results saw Nigerian teams claim two Grand Prizes across the Innovation and Network tracks, alongside two First Prizes in the Cloud track and a Second Prize in the Computing track category. Furthermore, Nigeria became the first nation in the history of the competition to field two all-female teams that both won the ultimate Grand Prize.
A key highlight of the competition was the project presented by the Grand Prize-winning Innovation Team. Named “Paravision,” the initiative is an artificial intelligence-driven healthcare solution built on Huawei technologies to improve the diagnosis and treatment of malaria and intestinal parasites. The solution was commended by judges for its technical depth and immediate real-world utility.
The achievements were celebrated at an awards ceremony where Nigeria’s Consul-General in Guangzhou, Mairo Musa Abbas, presented the Grand Prize trophies to the winning students, highlighting the country’s accelerating pipeline of digital and technological talent.
