Nigerian Troops Deliver Outstanding Performance at Benin Republic’s 66th Independence Celebration

Nigeria joined the Republic of Benin in celebrating its 66th Independence Anniversary in Cotonou, using the occasion to showcase military excellence and reinforce bilateral ties between the neighboring West African nations.

The event, held at the Amazone landmark in Cotonou, featured military parades and cultural performances. Attending at the invitation of the Beninese government, a Nigerian contingent commanded by Brig. Gen. Ayokunle Olufemi Owolabi of the 9 Brigade Nigerian Army delivered precision march-pasts in slow and quick time.

In an official statement released on Monday, Headquarters 9 Brigade Assistant Director of Army Public Relations, Maj. Akinola Ajibola, noted that the Nigerian contingent’s discipline and synchronization earned warm applause from dignitaries, including Beninese President Romuald Wadagni. A major highlight of the day was the Nigerian Army’s silent drill performance, which captivated spectators with high-level weapons handling and coordination.

Prominent figures present at the celebration included Nigeria’s Ambassador to Benin Republic, Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim; the Nigerian Defence Attaché, Col. S.A. Yahaya; foreign diplomats; and senior military officers.

Army authorities emphasized that Nigeria’s participation underscores a continued commitment to regional peace, defense cooperation, and long-standing diplomatic relations with Benin.
