Nigerian Troops Deploy to Benin Republic to Secure Peaceful Political Transition

A company of Nigerian soldiers was deployed to the Republic of Benin in April 2026 to help maintain stability during the country’s election period and safeguard the democratic process.
The deployment was carried out on the directive of President Bola Tinubu, with the troops positioned strategically to serve as a stabilising force before, during, and after the electoral process. While they were not assigned direct election duties, their presence was meant to deter potential security threats and reinforce public confidence.
Operating under the mission title Operation ATILEHIN ALAFIYA II, the soldiers conducted patrols, monitored key locations, and maintained a visible security presence across parts of the Cotonou metropolis and its surrounding areas.
The operation reached its peak with security support provided during the presidential inauguration of Romuald Wadagni. In the early hours of the ceremony, personnel were deployed to strategic points, including the main inauguration venue, establishing a layered security arrangement that ensured a smooth and incident-free event. The Commanding Officer provided direct oversight at the venue while mobile patrol teams carried out area domination operations to heighten situational awareness and ward off criminal activity.
The mission highlighted the Nigerian Army’s rapid deployment capability and its commitment to regional peace efforts within the ECOWAS framework. The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu, commended the troops for their professionalism, describing their performance as a clear reflection of the army’s core values.
Vice President Kashim Shettima represented President Tinubu at the inauguration, alongside other Nigerian dignitaries.
