NiMet Updates Staff Conditions, Launches AI Team to Boost Forecasting
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has approved a revised Conditions of Service for its employees and inaugurated an Artificial Intelligence Research and Integration Team, as part of efforts to modernize its operations.
The agency stated that the updated staff framework resulted from extensive consultations between management and unions, and has received necessary approvals from the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service. The revision aims to clarify career progression, welfare, and professional standards.
In a parallel move, NiMet has formed a specialized team to integrate artificial intelligence into its weather and climate forecasting systems. The team is tasked with developing strategies to blend AI tools with traditional forecasting methods, with the goal of improving the speed and accuracy of predictions.
The Director-General, Charles Anosike, emphasized that building AI capacity is essential for the agency’s future role in supporting sectors such as aviation, agriculture, and disaster management.
These steps are part of NiMet’s broader push to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance staff welfare, and adopt innovative technologies for improved service delivery.
