Nobody Can Stop Me From Traveling Within Nigeria — Sheikh Gumi
Prominent Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has addressed the public reaction surrounding his visit to Ibadan late last year, dismissing claims that his trip was part of an effort to impose Northern ideologies or Islamize Oyo State.
Gumi asserted his right to freedom of movement, stating that no one has the authority to restrict him from visiting any part of the country. He also clarified that his trip was not at the instance of any South-West Muslim individual or organization.
In a social media statement, Gumi explained that he traveled to Ibadan strictly as a representative of the Coalition of Northern Muslim Ulama (scholars). He argued that he was being unnecessarily dragged into local political dynamics driven by Islamophobia.
The cleric’s clarification comes amid heightened sensitivities regarding security and religious matters in the region. Recently, a school principal abducted in the Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State dismissed reports that her captors had demanded the implementation of Sharia law or a N1 billion ransom. Instead, she confirmed the kidnappers were demanding the release of their detained associates.
Similarly, the Islamic group Muslim Rights Concern rejected the alleged Sharia demands, labeling the reports a fabrication designed to tarnish the image of Islam.
Gumi had previously visited Ibadan in November 2025 as a special guest and speaker at the Southern Nigerian Ulama Summit held at the University of Ibadan, where he met with various regional Islamic scholars.
