Northern CAN Mourns Brave Plateau Imam Who Sheltered Christians During Attacks

Chief Imam of Nghar Village in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Sheikh Abdullahi Abubakar

The Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed profound sorrow over the death of Imam Abdullahi Abubakar, the 92-year-old Chief Imam of Nghar village in Plateau State, describing him as a “moral beacon.”

The late cleric gained national and international recognition in June 2018 for sheltering and protecting hundreds of Christians in his mosque and home during a violent attack in Barkin Ladi, reportedly saving nearly 300 lives.

In a statement on Saturday, the Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Joseph Hayab, praised Imam Abubakar’s courage and faith, stating, “He stood firm in the face of danger and chose humanity over hatred, peace over violence, and love over fear.” Hayab emphasized that the Imam’s legacy of sacrifice and compassion serves as a powerful lesson in religious tolerance and peaceful coexistence.

The association called on other religious leaders to emulate the late Imam’s example by promoting peace and protecting lives, especially during times of tension.

It extended condolences to his family and the Muslim community, praying for comfort and urging Nigerians to uphold the values of unity he embodied.
