Ogun: Fresh Gas Leak Leaves Many Hospitalized in Ijebu Ode

A suspected gas leak caused panic again in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, after several students and staff at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School near Epe Garage became ill and needed medical attention.
The incident, according to reports, happened on Wednesday during school hours, when students and staff noticed a strong, unpleasant smell in the school.
Soon after, many people started having breathing problems, weakness, and other health issues linked to exposure to the substance.
The affected people were taken to the General Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for treatment.
As of Wednesday, some victims were still receiving medical care after reporting discomfort, trouble breathing, and, in some cases, loss of consciousness.
This latest event has raised concerns among residents, as it is the third reported gas-related incident in the area in the past two months.
In April, about 40 students were hospitalised after a similar incident. In May, another event affected around 100 students and also required medical help.
Earlier, the Ogun State Government said that monitoring devices in the area detected methane gas as the likely cause of the repeated incidents.
Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, confirmed that the government was aware of the incident.
He said that monitoring equipment had already helped officials find where the gas was coming from.
He explained that investigations found the leak was coming from behind Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School in Ijebu-Ode.
He also said the state government had started working to fix the problem and prevent it from happening again.
