Omoyele Sowore Rules Out Alliances with Established Political Class

Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has firmly rejected the possibility of forming political alliances with established politicians he has consistently criticized for corruption and human rights abuses.

During an appearance on Arise Television’s *Prime Time* program on Wednesday, Sowore stated that compromising his principles for political power would be a betrayal of his long-standing activism. He emphasized that he cannot align with individuals he holds responsible for systemic corruption, the mismanagement of national resources, and past instances of violence.

“Why did I do all these years of activism for if all I want to do is to go and join the coalition of people who destroyed Nigeria?” Sowore questioned, insisting that he remains focused on a “coalition of the oppressed” rather than seeking partnerships with those he labels as the architects of the country’s decline.

Sowore also used the interview to address his ongoing legal battles and his experiences while in detention. He noted that he is currently facing multiple criminal cases, including cybercrime allegations, and recounted the logistical difficulties of attending multiple court sessions simultaneously. He maintained that these legal actions are often used as tools to punish him without the need for a formal conviction, citing his 2019 treason case which was eventually dropped after five years as a primary example of this pattern.

Reflecting on his time in custody, Sowore stated that he refuses to accept the mental conditioning of imprisonment. Instead, he views detention as an opportunity to exchange ideas with other inmates and advocate for systemic change. He also touched on the tragic death of his brother, whom he alleged was assassinated, and reiterated his past critical remarks regarding President Bola Tinubu, describing them as his interpretation of documented facts rather than mere political rhetoric.

Throughout the discussion, Sowore remained steadfast in his defense of freedom of expression, arguing that the law should not be weaponized by public officials to silence dissent. He concluded that he remains fully committed to confronting impunity and corruption, regardless of the personal and legal consequences he continues to face.
