Osun Commissioner Released After Brief Detention Following Ilesa Rally Shooting

The Osun State Police Command has released the State Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, Mayowa Adejoorin, after holding him in custody for nearly 24 hours following a shooting incident in Ilesa.

The arrest occurred on Saturday in the Isokun area of Ilesa West Local Government Area, where a political street rally held by members of the All Progressives Congress turned violent, leaving at least three people injured, including a 14-year-old boy.

According to the Osun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Ojelabi, police tactical units intercepted a white Lexus 350 carrying Adejoorin alongside an operative of the Amotekun Corps. Police stated that the vehicle was stopped near the scene of the incident, leading to the recovery of a pump-action firearm and expended cartridges. Three persons were confirmed injured and taken to local medical facilities.

Adejoorin was brought to the command headquarters in Osogbo for questioning regarding his presence near the scene. Police officials confirmed his release on Sunday, though status updates regarding the detained Amotekun operative remain unverified while investigations continue.

The incident has triggered conflicting accounts from political stakeholders in the area. Representatives of the APC Campaign Council alleged that the rally was disrupted when a vehicle accompanied by Amotekun personnel opened fire and caused widespread panic. Conversely, representatives of the Imole Campaign Council countered those claims, stating that video evidence shows political opposition members firing shots during the event and damaging local party property.

Police tactical teams remain deployed in the area as the investigation into the shooting continues.
