Oyo urges civil servants to pursue advanced skills beyond basic training

Civil servants in Oyo State have been advised to go beyond routine capacity-building programmes and actively seek additional knowledge to remain effective in their roles.

The state Commissioner for Establishments and Training, Prof. Abdulwaheed Adelabu, gave the charge on Friday after opening a one-day training workshop for 85 workers at the Simeon Adebo Staff Development Centre in Ibadan, the state capital.

The workshop, organised by the state government, featured four groups of participants, including auditors, account officers, secretaries, and train-the-trainers drawn from 25 ministries, departments, and agencies.

Adelabu said the government, through the staff development centre, remains committed to training all cadres in the service, both academic and non-academic staff, to sustain the legacy of Simeon Adebo.

Addressing the prevailing economic challenges in the country, the commissioner assured that workers’ welfare remains a priority for Governor Seyi Makinde. He noted that the economic hardship is not unique to Oyo State, adding that the government has taken steps to ease the burden.

He cited the Sustainable Action for Economic Recovery (SAfER) initiative, a N10,000 fuel subsidy allowance per worker to reduce transportation costs, and the provision of staff buses for commuting.

Adelabu further stated that Oyo State ranks among the top three states in Nigeria regarding workers’ welfare, based on economic indicators.

He encouraged participants to adopt a “learn to earn” mindset to increase their income sources.
