Persistent Impostor: The Chameleonic Persona of Gbenga Daniel

The controversy surrounding the demolition of a structure in Ijebu-Ode, reportedly associated with the family of Otunba Gbenga Daniel, the former Governor of Ogun State, continues to draw widespread attention and reactions both within and beyond Nigeria.
Initially, the narrative put forth by the Daniel family garnered sympathy in certain quarters, particularly among those less acquainted with the former Governor’s history. Much of this narrative circulated through social media channels and was largely shaped by supporters of Otunba Gbenga Daniel.
However, as more facts have come to light, questions have emerged regarding potential violations of Nigerian business registration laws, particularly as outlined in the Company and Allied Matters Act of 2020, in relation to the construction and ownership of this particular structure.
One of the notable concerns raised is the allegation that the former Governor and his spouse presented their venture as a Limited Liability Company and sought approval for property construction under this classification, a matter that has generated significant public scrutiny.
The circumstances surrounding why, during his tenure as Governor in 2009, Otunba Gbenga Daniel approved an enterprise, known as DATKEM, for construction activities without adhering to established legal requirements governing urban development, have come under scrutiny and remain a subject of debate.
While these revelations may be new to some, especially those outside of Ogun State, it is essential to acknowledge that Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s tenure as Governor from 2003 to 2011 has long been a topic of public interest and discussion. Allegations of financial mismanagement, a lack of transparency in financial matters, and the accumulation of state debt during his administration have persisted over the years.
These issues have continued to be part of public discourse, even years after his departure from office, shaping perceptions about his past actions.
Some observers have commented on Otunba Gbenga Daniel’s public demeanor, particularly his frequent and seemingly unwarranted smiling. It is important to remember that public opinion is formed based on actions and not physical appearances.
The recent controversy surrounding DATKEM Enterprises has further raised awareness of alleged improprieties and discrepancies associated with the former Governor’s past actions.
In conclusion, it is advisable for the current Governor of Ogun State, Prince Dapo Abiodun, to remain focused on delivering on his electoral promises and further strengthening state institutions. The actions of the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development in addressing the DATKEM issue underscore the importance of maintaining efficient and transparent systems within the state.
