Peter Obi Calls for Real-Time Electronic Transmission of Election Results

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that claims of inadequate network coverage can no longer excuse delays in Nigeria’s electoral process, demanding the implementation of real-time electronic transmission of election results.
Obi made the statement on Tuesday after joining the “Occupy the National Assembly” protest in Abuja. The demonstration was organized by members of the Obidient Movement and pro-democracy activists, who accuse lawmakers of undermining electoral transparency ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking to journalists, Obi said he participated to “demand urgent electoral reforms that truly reflect the will of the Nigerian people.” He emphasized that anyone seeking public office must undergo transparent due process, including providing verifiable educational records and engaging in open campaigns and debates.
On the critical issue of result transmission, Obi argued that technological barriers are unconvincing. “Most importantly, election results must be transmitted electronically and in real time to protect the people’s mandate and eliminate manipulation,” he stated.
He pointed to the nationwide operations of financial institutions as proof of existing digital infrastructure. “If banking systems function seamlessly, our electoral system can and should do the same,” Obi added.
The protest focused on a recent amendment by the Senate, which passed the Electoral Act Amendment Bill last week after removing the phrase “real-time” from its electronic transmission provisions. Demonstrators carried placards with messages such as “Our votes must count” and “No to electoral robbery.”
Obi urged Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain vigilant in the pursuit of credible elections, stating that the country must evolve from “a so-called Giant of Africa that disgraces the continent” to “a beacon of exemplary governance.”
