Peter Obi Condemns Arrest of Edo Students Who Protested Insecurity

Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, has strongly criticized the arrest and remand of 52 students in Ekpoma, Edo State, calling the action “utterly unacceptable.”

In a statement posted on his X account late Tuesday, Obi expressed alarm that students who protested against kidnapping and banditry in their community were detained. He stated that citizens should not be punished for voicing legitimate grievances about security threats.

Obi noted reports that the students were taken from their hostels at night following a protest, while the criminals responsible for the insecurity remain free. He warned that protests will persist as long as insecurity continues, urging the government to engage in dialogue and take decisive action to protect communities.

The former Anambra State governor called for the immediate and unconditional release of the students, emphasizing that arresting young people for demanding safety is intolerable.
