MRS. Elizabeth Bassey, a notable Nigerian businesswoman and dedicated community figure, has died at the age of 72. She passed away on January 8, 2026, at Wellstar Hospital in Austell, Georgia, due to complications from kidney dialysis.
Renowned for her entrepreneurial spirit and deep commitment to service, Mrs. Bassey owned and operated multiple storefronts in Warri, Delta State. She later moved to Atlanta, USA, to support her daughter’s family, volunteering to care for her pregnant daughter and grandchildren while her son-in-law served in the U.S. Army. Her dedication is credited with being a cornerstone of her son-in-law’s successful 15-year military career.
Her influence extended broadly within Nigeria. She was actively involved in developmental initiatives in both Ubulu-Uku, her paternal community in Delta State, and Calabar, her matrimonial home in Cross River State. Mrs. Bassey was a known supporter of education, provided training in retail business, and was a strong advocate for girl-child education. She was also recognized for her hospitality, often welcoming and raising strangers as part of her own family.
According to a statement from her family member, Mr. Edekamba Bassey, she will be remembered for her “unwavering commitment to her family and community.”
Mrs. Bassey was the widow of the late Chief Anthony Jacob Bassey, former Human Resources Manager at Chevron Oil Company PLC in Warri. She is survived by her six children: Mrs. Tilda Dike, Mrs. Rita Okoise, Mr. Dandy Bassey, Mr. Koko Bassey, Ms. Victoria Bassey, and Mr. Edekamba Bassey, along with many grandchildren.
Funeral arrangements will be announced at a later date, allowing friends, family, and the wider community to pay their respects.
