Plateau Records 14 Deaths, 441 Suspected Cases in Cholera Outbreak

Plateau State has recorded 14 deaths and 441 suspected cholera cases across four local government areas since the onset of an outbreak in June 2026. State Health Commissioner Dr. Nicholas Ba’amlong confirmed the figures during an update on emergency response operations, noting that 20 cases have tested positive via Rapid Diagnostic Tests, with six laboratory-confirmed through stool culture.

The outbreak, which has affected 25 wards and 107 settlements, originated in Mangu Local Government Area. Mangu serves as the epicentre, accounting for 10 deaths and 53 suspected cases. While active transmission in Mangu has halted with no new cases reported since July 22 ongoing transmission persists in Jos North, Jos South, and Barkin Ladi. Only three patients currently remain hospitalized, all within Jos North.

Health officials attributed the majority of fatalities to late presentation at health facilities. In response, the Ministry of Health has launched a multi-sectoral emergency initiative alongside the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF.

Interventions include expanding active case searches, deploying additional Oral Rehydration Points, distributing essential medical supplies, and providing subsidized treatment at designated care centers. Health authorities continue to urge residents to practice household water treatment, maintain personal hygiene, and seek immediate medical care upon experiencing symptoms.
