Police Arrest Looters After Edo Protest Turns Violent

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of suspects involved in looting and vandalism during a protest in Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.

The protest, which began peacefully on Saturday, was organized by residents over rising insecurity and the death of a local youth. However, it escalated when some individuals attacked a livestock market, slaughtering goats, chasing away traders, and causing property damage.

Police spokesperson Eno Ikoedem stated that the command had engaged with community leaders days earlier in a preventive move. When the protest was hijacked by violence, Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika led reinforcements to the area to restore order.

The statement noted that a military personnel discharged a firearm, injuring a 32-year-old protester, who is now receiving medical treatment. The officer involved has been identified, and military authorities have been notified for disciplinary action.

Commissioner Agbonika reiterated the right to peaceful protest but condemned acts of violence and vandalism. He assured residents that the command is intensifying efforts to address kidnapping and insecurity in the area.

Edo State Commissioner for Information Kassim Afegbua appealed for calm, describing the market attack as a “spontaneous and senseless mob action,” and confirmed that Governor Monday Okpebholo is in Ekpoma to engage with the community.
