Police discover three shallow graves, arrest man and herbalist for murder of his sister in Niger State

The Niger State Police Command has arrested one Habibu Umaru and two accomplices for the alleged murder of his sister in Bosso Local Government Area of the state.

The State Commissioner of Police, CP Shawulu Danmamman, who disclosed this during the end of the year press briefing at the police headquarters in Minna on Thursday, December 12, 2024, said the suspects were arrested for criminal conspiracy and culpable homicide.

According to the CP, the deceased, Hadiza Umaru was reported missing on December 1, 2024, and all efforts to locate her whereabouts proved abortive.

During investigation, her brother was arrested and he confessed to luring her to a herbalist identified as Aliyu Mallam Taiwe.

The herbalist, who was arrested with one Rabiu Aliyu, confessed to have given the victim a poisonous substance to drink for the treatment of “Evil Spirit”, leading to her death.

They further confessed to burying the victim in a shallow grave within Taiwe forest via Maitumbi.

The Police Commissioner noted that three additional shallow graves were discovered in the area.

“On December 5th, 2024, a complaint of a missing person was reported at the Crack-Squad Unit that, one Hadiza Umaru residing in Garatu, Bosso was discovered missing on December 1st, 2024 and all efforts to locate her proved abortive,” the statement read.

“In the course of investigation, one Habibu Umaru of Angwan-Maigari, Garatu Bosso was strongly suspected of the disappearance of the victim and he was arrested.

“During interrogation, he confessed to be the victim’s biological brother and deceitfully took her to one herbalist, named Aliyu Mallam Taiwe at Taiwe village via Maitumbi.

“The said Mallam was arrested with one Rabiu Aliyu and during interrogation, they confessed to have given the victim a poisonous substance to drink for the treatment of “Evil Spirit” and she d!ed instantly.

“They narrated further that the deceased was stripped of her cloth and buried in a shallow grave within Taiwe forest via Maitumbi.

“Investigation further revealed that three additional shallow graves were discovered in the area with the same method of killing the victim.

“Investigation continues and the suspects will be charged to court after investigation.”

Ogun: Housewife stabs her husband to death over alleged infidelity

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old woman identified as Iyanu Adedeji for st@bbing her husband, Funsho Jimoh to d3ath in the Gbonogun area of Abeokuta.

It was gathered that the couple were married with two children.

A source told Punch that an argument had ensued between the couple after Funsho allegedly accused Iyanu of extramarital affairs.

The disagreement was said to have degenerated into a scuffle during which Iyanu allegedly st@bbed Funsho in the chest.

“In the process of the fight, Mrs Iyanu, inflicted a wound on her husband’s chest with a domestic knife. She rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre, Idi-Aba, where the doctor on duty confirmed him dead,” the source said.

The spokesperson of the State Police Command, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and arrest in a statement on Sunday, January 13, 2025.

According to Odutola, Iyanu had reported herself to the Divisional Police Station in the area after the incident.

The PPRO noted that the suspect narrated that she took her husband to the hospital after realising that he was bleeding from the injury she had inflicted on him.

“On December 30, 2024, at about 12:15 PM, one Iyann Adedeji, a 22-year-old female residing at No. 3 Ifelodun Street, Unity Estate, Gbonagun, reported to the police station with a vehicle containing the body of her husband, Azeez Funsho Jimoh, a 28-year-old male who also lived at the same address,” the PPRO stated.

“According to her, the deceased was her husband of eight years, with two children, one of whom is deceased.

“She stated that the deceased accused her of having an extramarital affair, leading to a physical altercation between them that morning. During the scuffle, the suspect allegedly inflicted a wound on the deceased’s chest with a domestic knife.”

The suspect narrated that doctors on duty at the hospital confirmed him d3ad.

“The suspect is currently in custody. Detectives visited the scene of the incident and recovered the knife.A preliminary investigation is underway, and the case will soon be handed over to the SCID for a more thorough investigation,” Odutola stated.

She added that the state Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD, urged couples to avoid heated arguments and instead seek peaceful ways to resolve conflicts in their relationships.

NSCDC arrests 15 illegal private security operators in Edo

The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, said on Friday that 15 suspects were arrested for operating private security guard companies without a licence in the state.

Gbenga Agun, the State Commandant of the corps, who disclosed this in Benin during an event organised to mark the new year and his one year in office, said that five private guard companies were also sealed off by the corps.

Agun also added that the Private Guards Companies Department of the command trained 96 private guard personnel in the period under review.

While disclosing that 110 suspects were arrested for various criminal offences in the state in 2024, he added that five of the cases were charged to court, with five judgements secured in favour of the corps, and six others still pending in court.

He added that the anti-fraud unit of the command also recovered N1,655,000 for various victims in the year under review, among several other interventions.

According to him, the command handled 25 cases of intervention by the Agro Rangers Unit, preventing bloody clashes between farmers and herders.

“The corps also provided security services to farms like Okomu, Ellah Lakes Farms and NCSC Farms, among others. The Peace and Conflict Unit of the command also resolved 59 cases,” he said.

Cross River man arrested for allegedly killing mother for rituals

A 29-year-old man, Mathias Amunde Ugwe, who k!lled his mother, Mrs Justina Amunde, in Ohong community, Obudu Local Government Area of Cross River State, has been arrested.

The victim’s body was recovered from a well on December 28, 2025.

It was gathered that a combined team of the IPO, SA Security to Obudu Local Government Chairman, Chairman of the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Obudu Chapter, and men of the Nigerian Police Force, Batriko in Eastern Boki Local Government Area, arrested the suspect.

A publisher, Elijah Ugani, who confirmed the arrest in a Facebook post on Friday, January 10, 2025, said that an anonymous source hinted that the victim was m8rdered and her hair shaved for rituals.

The security operatives also apprehended the ritualist who instructed the suspect to shave his mother’s hair and bring it to him.

According to reports, Mrs Amunde attended the Christmas vigil on the 24th of December 2024 and came back very late.

She then locked all the doors in the house without any knowledge that her own son had connived with his friend and hid themselves in the store, waiting to commit the crime.

“A few hours into the night, the house help who stays with late Mrs Justina Amunde, went to the kitchen to get drinking water, found out that the k!ller Mathias and his friend were hiding in the store,” a source said.

“The house help then raised the alarm and the victim came to the rescue of the girl. Unfortunately for her, her own son, Mathias, started hitting her with a heavy hammer, after dispossessing her of cash.

“When he noticed that his mother was no longer breathing, his friend assisted him to carry the corpse and dumped it inside a well in the compound.

“Having deposited her corpse in the well, they ran out of the house with the house help to Boki Local Government Area and threatened her not to disclose the incident to anyone.

“But the house help escaped to Utanga, Obanliku Local Government Area to meet her parents on the 27th of December, 2024. The girl then narrated her ordeal to her parents, who later contacted us. We then found the corpse in the well on the 28th December, 2024”

It was also gathered that the suspect has a fractured leg as a result of an accident he had a few years ago.
